Day 7. The act: smile at a stranger.
No words. No setup. No money. Just the two seconds it takes to look up and let your face do something.
You've been carrying your morning, your to-do list, your own stuff — and so has the person walking toward you. Neither of you knows anything about the other's day. That's kind of the point.
A smile at a stranger doesn't require connection. It doesn't promise anything. It just says: I see you. You're here. That's enough.
The research on this is genuinely strange: the person who smiles often gets as much of a mood lift as the person who receives it. Your brain doesn't always distinguish between performing warmth and feeling it. Start the gesture, and the feeling tends to follow.
Two seconds. Zero dollars.
Today's challenge:
Next time you pass someone — on the street, in a hallway, at the elevator — look up and smile. Not a performance. Just the small, quiet version of it.
That's the whole thing.
Takes 2 seconds. Costs nothing. #KindnessIsFree
